Blog entry 2: What are you enjoying about your current independent reading book? Be specific. Include the title and author of the book in your entry.

  1. I am enjoying Gregor and the Marks of Secret by Suzanne Collins. My book is very action packed with lots of bloodshed. That keeps me on my toes and makes me want to read so much more. There is so much to anticipate and right now a war is breaking out. Rats are tunneling underground a castle and there are mice being transported from the war zone. This book gets you so hyped up about something and then BOOM some one comes behind you and slices un in half (that really doesn't happen but you will expect it!) With a fifth prophecy that Gregor must fulfill there is a part of it that gnaws at his soul as him being the warrior.

    1. I also read the Gregor the Overlander series a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. I also love the action and adventure in the story and the way it keeps you wanting to read more. I hope you like the rest of the series!

  2. I am reading Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater and I am really enjoying it so far. I love the way that she gives both Sam and Grace an interesting personality that makes them unique. For example, Grace is a graceful, curious, and independent girl who doesn't let anyone get in the way of what she wants. On the other hand, Sam is a sensitive boy who truly understands and appreciates art. He is described by Grace as "Sad and beautiful," which in my opinion is a thoughtful and accurate way to describe him. Another thing I love about Shiver is it's originality. When I had first heard about the book, I dismissed it as your typical cheesy werewolf book, but once I started reading it I was immediately glad I did. The way that Stiefvater describes things like Sam's connections with the other wolves, Sam changing from form to form, and Sam watching and protecting Grace all of her life really differentiates Shiver from other books. Out of all of the things I love about the book, what I love most about it is the way Sam and Grace's relationship is realistic and beautiful.

    1. Is Sam a werewolf ? Is Grace human, or not? I love romantic novels, would you recommend this for me?

    2. I have been wanting to read this book ever since you mentioned it a couple days ago! I always enjoy reading books where the main characters are complete opposites, but still find a way to connect and bring out the strengths in each other. Did the book ever loose your interest at some point or come off as a little slow going? I really look forward to reading it!

  3. I am currently reading "Matched" by Ally Condie. I like it so far, but it is sort of sounding like "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. I thought that book was okay, and I would probably rate it 3.5 out of 5 stars. Right now, the main character, Cassia, has just been "matched". It basically means that she has met the person she is going to marry. It happens to be her best friend. He is in her "town" of sorts (they live in the same neighborhood), but it is very uncommon to know your match. Most people get matched with a total stranger. When she first found out who she was matched with, it felt right to her. Now she's having second thoughts. Someone else's face flashed upon the screen she was viewing her match's information on--someone she knew as well. Did the Society actually make a mistake? I think that this book is going to be about her finding herself and trying to work toward what is right. I'm really excited for what is to come!

    1. I, too love that book. It went slowly in some parts of the book, but as it progressed, I could not put it down. The plot of the book was very interesting and made me feel excited when the author introduced new concepts to the story.

    3. I am reading matched right now and i find it interesting in many ways, because I wonder how all this began and what was the cause of it. Like you said I also feel very excited about whats to come.

  4. I'm sorry, I forgot how it is similar to "The Giver". I feel that "Matched" is similar to "The Giver" in a way because they are both kind of about looking through the veil that is over their eyes. They do as they are told by their leaders and that's that. I think Matched will end in the same way The Giver did: the main character will find themselves and figure out how life should really be.

  6. I am reading the book Alex Rider Point Blank by Anthony Horowitz. I am enjoying how action packed and fast the story is going. One minute, Alex is talking with his fake dad, the other minute he is running for his life. I also like how there are so many agents in the world and the M16 decide to chose a kid to do one of their most important missions. It makes us kids feel good because most of the time, adult character are the ones who do the "missions to save the world". And finally, I LOVE how Alex Rider would still save a girl that has treated him like trash. Fiona Friend was Alex Rider's fake Dad's daughter. She was stuck in a railway and Alex could have left her, but instead he saved her.

  7. I have just finished the book Burn Bright by Bethany Frenette. It is a very action packed adventure book that keeps you on your toes. Throughout whole book, secrets got revealed, making me want to read more. I also love the humor the author adds into the book. Mostly, I enjoy the cliffhangers at the end of chapters which keep me reading to find out what will happen next.

    1. I have 2 questions. One is, is the main charecter a boy or a girl. The title sounds a little like fault in our stars, so that makes me think it is a girl, but who knows. The other is, what genre is it. I would think it is realistic fiction by the way you described it. Thanks for posting.

    2. This book looks really interesting. What is the main characters name? Was this a challenging book to read? Or was this a "Vacation" book? Thank you for sharing your book! I will definitely look into it!

  8. Am still reading Outlanders by Brandon Mull. I am enjoying this book very much because it is so unique, the things that happen to the characters are so weird that it makes the book interesting. For instance, in the first chapter, the main character, Jason, gets falls into a pool, gets swallowed by a hippo, and then gets transported to another world. After a while he meets a girl also from this world at the blind wizard-prince's castle, they start a quest, then they battle a giant crab named Macroid in a sea cave. From those two sentences describing the first part of the book I think I prove my point. This book has a really cool world with but interesting thing in it and it makes you keep reading because you want to see what weird thing will happen next. I also enjoy the humor of the two main characters.

    1. Was it slow-going at first? I tried Brandon Mull's other series, Fablehaven, but I abandoned it during the second book because it was too boring to me and I couldn't get into it. Should I read Outlanders?

  9. I recently finished the book 'Counting by 7's' by Holly Goldberg Sloan. It is a slow going story but I think it is a must read. It follows the path of 'Out of my Mind' and Wonder'. Books that are about different kids just trying to find their way in the world. I really loved how the author picks on the topic of "what defines family". Willow Chance believed she had lost everything when her parents died, but when she temporarily moves in with some people she had only known for about a week she suddenly had something to live for.
As Willow slowly overcomes her grief she is determined to not create a hassle for her friends and to understand that everything was temporary, she would be moved to live with another family in a short time and what she was living now was not real. But as you turn each page you walk with Willow farther into a family that would take steep measures for each other without actually realizing it.
Another thing I loved about the book was how the author introduces a broken family and two men who haven't even began to live their life yet. But when Willow comes into the picture they realize that not only are they bringing Willow into the world, but that she's lifting a veil that has been clouding their vision as well. As you read you get to watch each character change for the better. This is a beautifully written story about a family that is not connected by blood, but by the friendship that brought them all out of the dark.

  10. Hi,
The book i’m reading is a Maximum Ride novel called Angel. The book is by James Patterson. This book is about how Max, the main character has to deal with her best friend gone. But later on her best friend, Fang needs her help. The thing is Once she’s with him things get out of hand. Now they're trying their best to work together which i find different, but interesting because they used to be able to share everything together. I enjoy many things about this book and despise some, but it’s just that the author is that always keeping me on my toes not letting me know what will happen next. In addition he’s always throwing crazy things my way. Which gets me to want to read more. for example When Fang runs away to go make his own group of six unique kids to save the world himself. I find this crazy because Max and Fang have been through alot together, they even grew up in dog crates with one another. Plus he also promised right before he left that he would never leave her side. I mean everything is so mysterious and surprising, sometimes I have to put my book down and catch my breath! It’s that dramatic! Well at the part that i’m on right now is both groups have to work together to save the world, but they're too busy arguing, and yelling at each other. Meanwhile the apocalypse is coming...

  11. I am reading the book Freakonomics by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner. I usually read fiction, but I chose to read a non-fiction book because the title intrigued me.The book is about economist Steven Levitt's view to the world. In the book, Steven answers unusual questions such as how sumo wrestlers are related to teachers, and how the Ku Klux Klan are like real-estate agents. I am at the part in which the authors explains, in a very complex way, how sumo wrestlers are like teachers: they both cheat! The authors use examples to explain how and why they are alike. For example, in Oakland, the city promised a $25,000 pay raise to teachers whose students had great grades. The teachers cheated to get more money. Sumo wrestlers cheat for glory(sumo wrestling is the national sport of Japan). The book also says that teachers and sumo wrestlers are not the only ones who cheat, but other adults cheat too!

    1. I like how you actually think that other adults cheat too. The author is funny to think that Teachers cheat to get money and Sumo wrestlers cheat too. I don't understand why the author is so against teachers. Is it because he didn't like school or what?
